Not much rest

The weekend was too busy to have too much rest and relaxation!

Friday found Hazel quite anxious and restless most of the day. Her temperature was down and I was hoping the “show” would get started soon. But she wanted to stick to her usual schedule and wait till the wee hours of the morning to start the action!

So her two puppies arrived between midnight and 4 am. Thankfully, I did get some sleep before, in-between puppies and after the pups came and were settled in. They are doing well!

She has two gorgeous “cow” puppies; a tricolor male and a black and white female.

By Saturday night, Sky’s temperature had lowered more than it had before and I suspected she was getting closer to whelping. Thankfully, she let me sleep that night but by Sunday morning she was obviously getting restless and she was having slight contractions.

I was so thankful that her labor started in the daytime because we had to assist with the delivery. Her first puppy was the biggest and was coming out backward I first thing I saw was one foot protruding from her back end! After quite a bit of pushing and manipulating the second foot and tail appeared, but I did have to help pull the baby out while she pushed. Poor girl! What a painful experience for her first baby. 🙁

Thankfully, that baby was alive and seemed fine. The second baby needed a bit of help breathing; I had to do so vigorous rubbing, suctioning and such before it was breathing properly. Number three and four arrived without much trouble and they rounded out her litter of four beautiful blenheim puppies; two boys and two girls.

We’re so excited that both of these litters arrived safely and that the moms and babies have settled in and are doing well. Sky is doing great as a first-time mom!
