Sometimes you don’t get a dog or puppy post but a general farm “story”. 😉

Saturday morning dawned with wintery weather. We only got rain but it was very cold and as the day progressed snow topped the nearby mountains. Spokane and some neighboring areas also got the cold, white stuff. In fact, the last time Spokane had weather like this in September was 1926!

When I went out to feed my horses that morning, Gracie (the boss mare) was shivering.

Now, normally our horses grow thick winter coats to keep them toasty all through winter. A healthy horse’s coat is better insulation then an “artificial” coat (aka blanket.) Our horses also have a covered area to get out of the weather if they choose to, plus we feed them well which fuels them and keeps them warm.

This cold spell hit so early that the horses hadn’t had a chance to grow their winter woolies. Thankfully, I still had an old blanket around from Gracie’s mom so I covered her with it and fed them all a nice breakfast.

But it got me thinking. If we get more cold days like this it might be a good plan to have back-up coats for all three horses.

What would we do without being able to shop online living so far from most stores? I quickly found some nice blankets on sale and got them ordered. Now we’ll be ready for the next cold snap should we need extra cover.
