Cami has delivered a beautiful litter! It happened Tuesday evening, but I wanted to wait a few days to let mom and babies settle in and make sure everyone is doing well. So far, so good!
We did have a little hiccup with one puppy, but hopefully all is well now. Mom was very adamant about doing everything herself and chewed one cord super short. Once I was able to get the puppy away from her (it was the second one) and check things, it was bleeding and there was no cord left to clamp. Cami! *sigh. So I did what I could and sprinkled cayenne pepper on the area (cayenne will stop the bleeding and only stings for a second…honestly the puppy didn’t react to it). Then I put a non-stick pad and vet wrap around the belly to apply pressure to the area. Next the pup was placed in the incubator to warm up and dry off. I knew if I gave it back to mom she would tear the bandage off and keep licking the area.
Thankfully, the next puppy came fairly soon and kept mom busy and not worried about the pup I hadn’t confiscated. I kept the pup in the incubator for about an hour until mom was done delivering, I had cleaned out the crate and given her a new bed. By then my great wrap job had come off (*face palm) but the bleeding had stopped and things looked good so I quietly added the extra pup back in with the rest who were nursing.
Cami didn’t stress about it and settled down nicely to cuddle them all.
And wonder of wonders, we have three beautiful apricot girls! And one gorgeous black and tan boy; exactly the same colors she had two years ago!
