As you guys know our Ben has an eye issue which we’ve been treating. I can see some change in the eye, but at this point we’re just holding steady and not doing anything drastic with it.
That being said, his appetite hasn’t been the greatest lately. Although, I’m thinking and hoping that it has more to do with the very hot summer we’ve had and not the eye issue.
He’s never been a voracious eater. I usually feed all the dogs at night, but he would usually wait until morning to finally eat his food. But even that was changing.
So I started adding canned food to his kibble. Sometimes he ate it and sometimes I had to coax him to finish it before I let Cajsa, Zuma and Cody out in the morning.
Well, when we got back from our trip, there was only one can left and I wasn’t planning on driving to town right away. So I dug through the freezer (because I always have some meat in their for the dogs) and cooked him up a feast! There was chicken, chicken hearts, beef liver, ground turkey and ground beef. Then I steamed some veggies; broccoli, sweet peppers and carrots. But I did end up pureeing them as I figured he’d eat it better that way.
So now his dinner is kibble with a pile of home-cooked goodness mixed in. Plus on top of that I switch off by adding chicken broth, Kefir, an egg or sardines. He’s cleaning his bowl up every night now!
And there’s enough for treats for the smaller dogs too!
I have little molds to put in the freezer. I added the veggie puree and stuck a half of a chicken heart in each one. Then I’m freezing some of the chicken broth in ice cube trays for later.
So the past few nights the little dogs have had extras with dinner. They had chicken wings for Sunday dinner. These are fed raw as the bones are soft enough for them to crunch and chew up. And I cut the wings in three sections so they’re not chewing on a big on chunk and trying to wolf it down. Plus I’m supervising their dinner and they’re eat fed separate in their crates. Never, ever feed your dog a cooked bone! Cooked bones will splinter and cause havoc inside them 🙁
Monday they got farm-fresh hard boiled eggs. And last night they got some of the pureed veggies, with freeze-dried blueberries (I find more of my dogs like the freeze-dried “crunchy” blueberries that the fresh ones) and sardines. Tonight they will have their “pupsicles” of veggie puree with chicken hearts and some chicken broth added to their Fromm food.
Yummy, yum!
