The first week

The first week has already gone by as we have tended to Winter and her puppies. They are all doing amazing! Winter proved to be the perfect mother at the arrival of her first litter and this one is proving no different. She is calm, quiet and a doting mother.

We weigh the pups each day (or twice a day at first) to make sure they are all gaining weight. Some gain right from the start, some need a little supplementation, or a day or two as mom’s milk comes in before they start gaining. Each litter is different and that’s why I am very hands on and watchful.

This litter has gone from starting weight of 5.7 ounces (the littlest guy) to 8.2 ounces and know ranging in weight from 10.5 to 15.8 ounces. So they’ve all basically doubled their birth weight in the first week!

We are doing ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation). If pups are doing well, this is started on day three and continues through day sixteen. Here’s more about it https://pinewoodcavapoos.com/2023/04/04/ens/

Today they each had their first teeny tiny toenail trims. This is something that will be done weekly until they go to their new homes. We also checked their collars to see if they needed adjusting or changing.

And then there’s the care of mom, changing her bed every day, making sure her food and water are full, giving her her daily supplements (NuVet and calcium), letting her in and out to potty and paying the cheese tax for loving on her babies. *wink
