The Poodles are finally here! And as our title states, Lyric took her own sweet time baking that litter and finally whelping it. And she took a two hour break between each puppy.
We usually breed a female two to three times during her cycle to hopefully catch when she ovulates (each girl is an individual so there’s no set schedule). Since we own the female and male we usually let them decide the best time to get together. If the female isn’t accepting of the male, it ain’t going to happen now matter how interested he is. *wink*
If a breeder were using someone else’s stud dog then you would have your veterinarian drawn blood for a progesterone test (or several over a few days) to determine the best time to breed and nail down when she is likely to ovulate.
The normal gestation for a dog is sixty-three days. My girls seem to always take from the first breeding and end up delivering around day sixty to sixty-one.
Lyric and Bonus had three romantic encounters with a “skip” day in between each breeding. So our normal gestation aka possible deliver days were spread over about a weeks time.
As I mentioned my girls usually get pregnant from the first breeding so I really expected Lyric to do something by the end of last week. Especially when her temperature did the big drop (which usually means whelping is coming with twelve to twenty-four hours) on Friday morning!
The temperature drop said “now”, the dog said “no”. She was acting completely normal; eating, drinking, bouncing out the door for breaks and showing no signs of early labor.
Sixty-three days from the first breeding was Saturday. Sunday she had milk in. Sixty-three days from the second breeding was Monday. Monday night she was a bit restless. Sixty-three days from the third and final breeding was yesterday. And after another restless night, her hard labor finally kicked in that morning. Although Lyric makes birthing look easy.
She delivered her three pups safely (although #2 decided to come out breech). They were all vigorous and were trying to nurse before mom even had the cord chewed and the pups detached from the placenta!
I’m excited to share we have two girls and one boy. The boy is stunning black and tan. One of the girls looks just like Lyric (merle) and the other smaller girl is an apricot and white.

Lyric and the pups are doing amazing!

Just a reminder these are purebred miniature Poodle puppies. We bred the litter in hopes of producing a daughter from Lyric before she retires. There may or may not be puppies available. Time will tell how they grow and mature so we won’t be deciding for a while who will stay and who might be available. Who knows, I might even keep the boy and retire Bonus!
But if you are possibly interesting in a purebred Poodle please shoot me an email and I’ll keep your name in case there are some available. (pinewoodcavapoos@gmail.com)
I have the Wyze cam hooked inside the crate so I can check on Lyric and the babes without disturbing them🙌
Congratulations! As the human of one of your beautiful miniature poodles, I have to say they are the best!
Aww…thank you Ginny! I’m excited as we haven’t had any Poodles since the Simba/Diego litter! <3
I love miniature poodles. We had the mom, dad, and kept one of the babies. The dad out last mom and daughter. They are the most amazing dogs. Congrats
Thanks!
