How can they?

How can Glory’s pups be six weeks old already? And she still hardly wants to be away from them. But this next week we will give them more and time away from mom as they work toward weaning off of her and become more independent.

Today we gave them a puppy challenge to get their little brains working. Challenges, puzzles and such are great for puppies. Learning at a young age to conquer and figure things out helps them to not get frustrated with challenges later in life.

Of course we want to start off with simple challenges that they can conquer. The last thing we want to do is frustrate a puppy.

One of the first baby challenges these guys had was simply figuring out how to get in and out of the litter box. Then the litter box sides got taller and they figured that out. Another challenge they’ve had since moving to the puppy room, is the ramp that goes in and out of their puppy pen into their play area. It didn’t take them long to figure that out.

Today we tried a barrier challenge with a food reward.

I set up a “fence” and put puppy on one side and the dish of food on the other. I made it simple. The food was at the end of the fence, just on the other side from the puppy. And I made sure to hold the dish up so the puppy come smell what was in it.

Merry said “no, thank you! I don’t want to play this game.” She wasn’t hungry even though it was lunch time and obviously not real food motivated today. We’ll try again another day.

Bright went next and enjoyed her “prize” after getting around the fence barrier.

Jolly also found the food. Although he kind of just s.t.r.e.t.c.h.e.d his next around the end of the barrier to find the food.

“yum, this is good!”

You can see how Jolly is on one side and the food on the other but it’s right at the end of the fence.

And they got a cheese snack. Before we introduce them to the clicker I want to make sure they will eagerly take treats from me hand or in this case, cheese off my finger.
