The perfect Christmas gift?

I just wanted to share my thoughts on puppies as Christmas gifts.

First off, I don’t think any adult should be “surprised” with animal as a gift. An animal is a lifetime commitment. Any adult committing to raising and training an animal should be part of the decision making process. That being said, if a couple decides they’re ready for that, and one wants to surprise the other by picking a puppy out, then go for it. As long as they have come to that decision together. Although I personally would want to help with the choosing too if I was on the receiving end. 😉

The other scenario we probably more frequently hear about is parents wanting to give a puppy to a child or children. I see nothing wrong with that as long as parents understand that the ultimate responsibility for care and training for that new pup falls on you! Children can become a huge part in the care and raising of a new puppy, but the bottom line is; you, as the adult are responsible for that puppy’s well-being. Are you committed to that?

Now, would I recommend you get that puppy Christmas Eve and plop him or her under that decorated tree for a Christmas morning surprise? Absolutely not!

Think about it. Christmas can be hectic enough already. The kids are off school, decorations are everywhere, you have family visiting or you are leaving to visit them. There’s extra cooking and preparation going on. It’s crazy busy. Definitely not a good time to introduce a new pup to the scene.

Moving puppy to his or her new home is stressful enough for the little tyke. Just think, he or she has recently been to the veterinarian for a check-up, probably just got a vaccination, left familiar surroundings of mom and litter mates and traveled by car or plane to get to you. That transition time should be as low key and calm as possible. The last thing he or she needs is to be the center of the Christmas rush.

So I have a better idea! If the puppy you have chosen is ready around Christmas or soon after, surprise your sweetie or your children with a big box of fun items for your new puppy. We would be happy to send you a current photo that you can add to the box or card introducing the puppy to the receiver. Then puppy can arrive after all the excitement has subsided. And you and the family will have more quality time to start the bonding process.
