It a busy time for our five-week-olds and as I mentioned in a previous post it was almost time to move them. So move them we did.

First we start with a spotlessly clean puppy pen. This is when they get introduced to their first crate also.

Then add some litter boxes. Now since they are moving to bigger quarters, I like to place two boxes right outside the crate door. That way when they wake up and set off the bed to potty the box is right there. Another bigger box is in the back corner in case they move farther from the crate to potty. At this age we want to give them lots of correct places to relieve themselves.

When they are bit older I’ll remove the two boxes in front of the crate and move one next to the one in the back so they’re farther from the crate.

Then we do a toenail trim with each puppy. They’ve been having this done weekly since they were a week old so they are getting quite used to it. I just grab a paw in my hand…

Then push down on the toe to expose the toenail. Here I’m purposefully trying to show it for the picture. If you look really close you can see the white tip and then where the pink quick is. You just want to snip off that little white tip. If you get back too far into the quick the toenail will bleed. It’s not the end of the world, but it might hurt a bit and puppy will be a little leery the next time his toenails are trimmed.

When puppies are this age, I use human toenail trimmers to just snip off the sharp end. When they are bigger I will switch to regular dog (or cat for small feet) toenail trimmers.

Normally we remove the dewclaws from our Cavapoos to make grooming easier. But we had some things going on when this litter was due to have their removed so it didn’t get done. In this picture, I’m pointing out where the little dewclaw nail is so I can trim that one too.

Bentley is done with his beauty treatment and placed in his new home. He weighs 3# 5 oz at 5 weeks.

Each puppy is also given their weekly weigh-in. Here is McLaren weighing in at 2# 11 oz.

Now there are two puppies in the pen.

I also check to see if their collars need to be adjusted or changed. Mercedes got a bigger collar. She was the biggest at 3# 6 oz.  Ferrari was very close at 3# 5 oz.

And now number three and number four puppy are added to the pen.

This may not be very exciting to you, but when a puppy is just put in a new pen and goes clear to the farthest away litter box to make a deposit, we get pretty happy. 😀

Porsche and Bugatti also got weighed, toenails trimmed and collars adjusted or changed. Porsche also weighed 3# 5 oz and Bugatti was our second to the smallest at 2# 15 oz.

Once they were all settled in the pen and I had their new weights I was able to calculate how much dewormed to give each one. I use the whipped cream cheese as a treat with these young pups because they usually will try it and it’s easy for them to lick off my finger.

Normally I’d be using two hands to give the liquid medication, but since I had to take the picture I’m just holding the syringe in place.

Then we follow that medicine with a cheese chaser!

“Thanks mom, that was yummy!”

Wow! Such great description and information on what you do for the puppies. I can’t get enough of it! Dying to get on the waiting list- arghh. Any info. On how long it is between time periods of when the waiting list is closed before it opens again. I think I missed a brief moment it was opened.

I really appreciate the way you take the time to start getting the puppies accustomed to having their nails trimmed.
