Pupdate~Honey

Aww…a sweet update from Honey’s mom and dad. And yes, they kept the name Honey. She was the only apricot from Sally and Bonus’s litter.

“Hi Jennifer

Honey continues to do great.  She is such a confident, lively, intelligent girl. She came with us for a car ride to a local pumpkin stand where she helped us pick out some fall decor (see photo).  She has her vet appointment next week so has not been out meeting other dogs yet.

She loves running around in our backyard and “helps” me pull weeds.

Thank you for all you did to prepare her for the transition , she hasn’t missed a beat.”

Mr. Clean

It’s so nice to have Mr. Clean around to help with puppy messes. And I don’t mean the bald guy on the yellow bottle 😉

Hubby does a lot of big cleaning jobs for me. And it was time to do a deep clean on the puppy room. A lot of fluff, dust, food and water (when I fill water dishes or puppies stick their feet in it) and such falls through the puppy pens to the trays underneath. I don’t change that part daily because the puppy pads would break the bank for one thing. Plus it becomes messy again quickly. So we change beds and litter boxes which are the things puppies come in contact with and sweep, vacuum and mop that floor where puppies play. Then we do a deep clean after puppies go home. But even though there are still three Aussiedoodles the room was due for a deep clean.

So I picked up toys, cleaned litter boxes and sweep while the pups were outside. Then hubby cleaned under the pens, vacuumed and mopped. It looks so nice now!

Now time to wash another load of toys, beds and dog towels. It’s a never-ending house-keeping job around when you have puppies and dogs in the house! I’m so glad to have a helper.

Fall fun!

Fall has hit with a lot of rain storms. So when the sun shines we take advantage of it!  The Aussiedoodle girls are soaking up as much as they can when it’s out.

We still have two beautiful girls available, significantly discounted this week only. I can meet in Spokane Sunday morning for puppy delivery. Please reach out soon!

Can I tell you a horse story?

As you know, I usually share about life with dogs and puppies on our blog, but sometimes I might share a bit more about farm life or a non-dog related story. So if you’re not into that, feel free to skip today’s post. And it’s kind of long…

If you have been following along even for a little while, you might have noticed we have added a new horse to the farm. Today, I’d like to share his special story. Some of it might be upsetting to animal lovers, but sharing his information might be informative to someone new to these situations.

For background, I need to mention a bit about the world of horse auctions and unfortunately, slaughter. The US shut down the slaughter plants a few years back, but Mexico and Canada still practice it. Thousands of horses from the US are shipped to our northern and southern neighbors every year for slaughter. Here is a link if you’d like to be more informed. It is not a humane way to go.  https://www.aspca.org/improving-laws-animals/public-policy/horse-slaughter

Horse auctions happen in many towns every month. Horses of all shapes, sizes, ages and conditions are auctioned off to the highest bidder. In every auction house you will find people that buy unwanted horses specifically to ship to slaughter and make money. These are referred to as kill buyers in the equine world. A lot of time they are buying the horse nobody wants; the old horse, skinny horse, lame horses, etc. anything that will bring a meat price.

Which brings me to my story. I follow a lot of horse rescues and horse people on Facebook. One rescue lady I follow, will buy horses for families at auction before the KB gets them. She also shares horses that are heading to slaughter in hopes of finding them homes before they ship. One breed that she loves to help are the Standardbred horses.

The Standardbred horses are bred for harness racing. Once they are finished with their racing career they are taken to auction where a lot of them are bought by the Amish and become buggy horses. Unfortunately, once they are no longer usable to the Amish (too old, become injured or lame, etc), a lot of Amish then take them to auction. Because the Standardbred is a big horse, they can bring good money for the KB since they are sold by the pound for slaughter.

Great Scot (the registered name of our new horse) was at a kill buyer’s awaiting shipment to Mexico with a group of about twenty other Standardbred horses. The KB allows the rescue to advertise and share the horses in hopes they will find homes instead of heading to the horrible fate awaiting them south of the border.

Great Scot and one other horse were in the worst shape and what the rescuer considered “compassion pulls”; meaning she was hoping someone would bail them out so they could be humanely euthanized. A kind, end-of-life gesture which is better than being crammed into a truckload of other scared horses, traveling for days on a bad leg. She thought maybe his leg was broken. He was so lame.

This is a snippet of the video I saw on him. You can see how much pain and discomfort he was in.

I didn’t need another horse. But I thought, I could at least help him have an easy passing and end his suffering. So I contacted the rescue lady and told her my thoughts. I sent money to bail him and she made arrangements to take him to her barn where the vet would likely take an X-ray and then help him go painlessly if need be.

He’s blind in the right eye

A couple days later when she was able to transport him to her place, she noticed that he was walking better. When he got settled at her barn she had the farrier (the person who trims horse hooves) come out to trim his extra long feet. Horses feet need to be trimmed on a regular basis, like every 6-8 weeks. (Some of these horses come to the auction with old shoes nailed on that they have been wearing for six months!). The farrier found that Great Scot had a bad abcess in his hoof. Since the hoof is a hard structure, the pressure of an abcess inside the foot can build up and be extremely uncomfortable. It eventually can “blow out”(or open up) on the bottom of the foot or up along the hairline. Then the horse finally gets relief as the abcess starts to drain. And that’s what happened. Once his abcess opened up, he got relief and was walking better.

Tucking into some hay. You can see how thin he was.

So now he was on the mend, getting some good groceries and relaxing at her barn. And he was not longer a euthanasia case.

Enjoying some grass at the rescue barn

But I still did not need another horse!

The rescue lady considered me his “sponsor” since I had bailed him and helped to get him treatment, board and feed.

But I still did not need another horse. So I asked her to please share him on her rescue group page and find him a good home.

There was interest and lots of nice comments on him, but no serious interest. Days turned into weeks. We’d get “bites” on him, but nothing worked out. And  I had told the rescue lady when we pulled him “if” nobody stepped up, I wouldn’t leave her rescue with another horse. So in case he didn’t find a good home, I started making a backup plan with a reputable cross-country horse transport company.

On his way here. It took four days of travel to get from PA to WA.

And well, you can guess the rest. No reputable home stepped in to adopt him, so he came here. He came home. <3

Picking him at the barn in Spokane where the transporter dropped him off.

Meeting his new brothers. Washing that Amish dirt off 😉 Now he can roll in the Washington dirt.

Just letting him decompress and settle in. He’s had his first session with a horse masseuse. He’ll need more sessions as his body is a mess.

Looking sharp in his new red halter. I had an old halter that fit but I thought he deserved his own brand new one❤️

And I’ve decided his barn name will be Boone. It was a name that stuck out to me for a couple of reasons as I looked through names. When I looked up the meaning, that clinched it!

Welcome home, Boone!

She passed!

Thursday was our last class day. Or actually it was testing day. We basically went through the exercises that we’d been practicing to see if each dog was competent and steady in each exercise. If so, they passed and earned their AKC Community CGC! In fact, all of the dogs passed in this class. They did so well.

The test was held at one of our local retirement centers in town. (I’ve covered up faces for privacy of the residents and staff.)

We practiced some basics outside when we first arrived to get the dogs warmed up.

Then we headed inside for the testing.

In case anyone was wondering what exercise the dogs are required to do here is a picture of the test sheet. The bottom contains some extra exercises which are not required but great practice. Our instructor included some of these during the test also.

And a group picture. One dog did not make it to the testing and two and already left. But we had seven total and five were German Shepherds. And the two “other” breeds, an Aussie and a Lab both had the same name!

Then I stopped to grab some things at the store and decided Cajsa needed a treat after her “graduation”.

And then I grabbed something for the family to have for our late lunch. And Cajsa had to practice “leave it” on the way home.

😂

Pupdate~Sweetie

A pupdate I received from Sweetie’s mom a couple days after puppy delivery day. And after they flew all the way home to New York!
“Hey Jennifer! I meant to send the following last night, but just realized it didn’t go through. I think there were too many pictures, so I’ll try to send them separately —
It was so nice to meet you (and Kaia Jade fka Sweetie 😍) on Sunday too!! Thank you for the pictures, they’re so precious, and she is an absolute dream 🙂
The trip home went as smoothly as I could’ve asked for it to! She pottied 4x in her litter box, which I set up in family bathrooms, changing rooms etc. She got acquainted with her own reflection, and was almost completely silent on the flight, just a few whimpers that stopped when I opened the carrier and pet her a bit. Between the blanket and yak you gave me, and the snuggle puppy I brought, I think she felt pretty comfortable in there, which was a relief for us both.
Yesterday (Monday) we both completely crashed and napped for half the day – the red eye left us wiped. She still managed to essentially sleep through the night, save a bit of 5am whimpering after she politely pooped in her litter box. After a few cuddles she was back asleep in her playpen, and we didn’t get up until 9am.
The vet today (Tuesday) went smoothly, she was a hit among the staff, and the vet gave her a brief wellness exam – listened to her heartbeat, felt her belly, etc – all is well. She had a good time riding in the cart around the pet store and making friends, and got acquainted with her downstairs playpen when we got home. Her whimpering, barking and crying when we close the playpen is improving somewhat,  though it’s hard to hear her sound so sad.
She is an absolute dream. Thank you for raising such a wonderful girl! I’ll send the pictures separately, and more updates along as I keep getting to know her 🙂

And a ten week old picture

❤️

Still looking for their forevers with a pupdate

We still have two Aussiedoodle girls looking for their forever families! Their adoption fee has been drastically reduced. You won’t find this quality of a puppy with as much time and love invested for this amount of dollars anywhere. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity. I’m needing to get them in their forever homes ASAP and I need to go visit my dad. <3

And if you happen to be in Central California we are headed that way in about a week and can bring a puppy with if you can meet in the Modesto area to pick up your puppy.

The girls are nine weeks old, using a litter box and when the weather’s nice going outside to potty. (We’ve had loads of heavy rain lately). They have been dewormed, had a stool sample checked, had their first puppy vaccination and a thorough check-up by our vets.

They are both sweet, playful, happy girls with big cuddle factor! I’m guessing they’ll mature in the 20 lb range.

For those just hearing about these pups, mom is a purebred mini Poodle (who loves to climb fences, hence the unexpected litter of pups!) and dad is a very charming purebred mini Australian Shepherd.

Please reach out via email at pinewoodcavapoos@gmail.com or phone if you have questions 509-675-4887. If you’re serious about a puppy, here is the link to our application.

Adoption Form-part 1

Panther (yellow collar)💛

Rabbit (purple collar)💜

And for those wondering if this mix is the right one. Let me share an update from Bear (now Poppy’s) mom!🧡

“Hi Jennifer,
The trip home went better than expected. We took Poppy to lunch with my nephew and we ate at Italia Trattoria, which I highly recommend as they have a large outdoor space. Poppy got to do some bonding with all of us during lunch before the long trip home. I bought one of these dog carriers pictured below and she settled right in. It is going to be great to help keep her off the ground and keep my hands free for the first 16 weeks. She sat in the pink swaddler during the whole lunch and never said a word. She did cry a little bit each time we stopped on the way back to Seattle but she settled down after about 10 minutes.
Our first night at home was trial and error, I am in an apartment so if she cries, I eventually have to get her up. She slept until 3am and wouldn’t go back to sleep, so I got her up and fed her a little bit as she didn’t finish all her dinner while traveling. She went right back down until 5am when I had to get up. She ran work errands with me today and sat in her pink satchel while we walked through the stores. She saw lots of new people and experienced many loud sounds at the hardware store and from the garbage truck, oh my!
I took her home at lunch and put her in her day area and she laid right down and didn’t look up to see me leave. I have a pen that is about 5’x5′ with the litter tray, so we’ll see how she does for 4 hours. I’m pretty sure she is going to sleep most of the time, she was exhausted from the last 24 hours.
She is super sweet and she reminds me of a cat how she pounces on her toys and jumps at being scared of her tail! Today she saw herself in a mirror, she jumped back, pounced forward and then barked! She is a really sweet girl and really smart, and she is already responding to positive feedback as I give her tiny pieces of string cheese for praise for good behavior. And she likes to roll over on her back so you will pet her belly! Ha!

Thanks again, I’m really happy and glad I didn’t wait for a Cavapoo! :)”

She flew away

Yesterday I made another trip to Spokane to meet a family at the airport. They were flying in to pick up one of our little Aussiedoodle girls, Fox.

I got there with plenty of time for Fox to potty and play a bit in the back of the truck.

Waiting for her family

It’s always fun when a family comes back for a second dog from us. They have a gorgeous Cavapoo girl that they picked up three years ago, who they describe as a “princess”. I hope this little one doesn’t dethrone her!

I’m sure it will take a few days for them both to adjust.

Happy life Fox! (now known as Onyx)

🖤

Training for the test

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, Cajsa went with me to Spokane to deliver puppies on Sunday. I’m trying to get more practice sessions in on her for her upcoming test on Thursday.

We practiced a bit of basic obedience in the parking lot before we met with the puppy families. Then after we were all finished and everyone had gone their separate ways, Cajsa and I loaded in the truck to head out.

But first, I did some searching for pet friendly stores in Spokane to visit. There is an app called “Bring Fido” where you can search your area, city or town for pet friendly stores, restaurants and hotels. It’s a great resource for dog owners and also for new puppy owners. It will give you ideas of places to take your puppy out socializing in dog friendly environments.

I found several and picked out some in the general vicinity of where we would be traveling towards home.

The first was The General Store. I’ve been in this store a few times but didn’t know they were pet friendly. And the employees were so welcoming! There was a man at the entrance with a jar of dog cookies ready to great any canine friends!

We wandered through the store, practiced sit/stays, down/stay, wait/come, met some people and a strange looking big foot/zombie (?), went up and down the stairs and whatever else I could think of. She sometimes doesn’t like to wait or stay and tends to get up and follow me or move before she is released from the position so we did a lot of those types of exercises throughout the afternoon at different stores.

Next we stopped at Lowe’s

We practiced more of the same exercises, saw some weird halloween decorations.

Our next stop was At Home

We did more regular practice exercises and saw some different items; small statues, Mr Claus, and a German Shepherd in the mirror 😉 I tested out a couple comfy chairs while Cajsa waited and she tested out a moving cart. It wiggled a bit when she got on, but she still stepped up and sat down when I asked her too.

And lastly, instead of going to Home Depot we visited Petsmart. Now, I wouldn’t recommend new puppy owners taking their puppies to a pet store until they are fully vaccinated. But no worries with a fully vaccinated dog.

We did a bit of practice and wandered through the store but didn’t stay as long since we were both getting tired. It was time to get home and play with puppies!

Good job, Cajsa!
